2018/09/15 A Terra Preta workshop according to permaculture principles was conducted by Brian and Conrad. On the basis of permaculture design principles we followed up on the Terra Preta production on site, via pyrolyses stoves and dry toilets. We finished with slow-cooking a wonderful meal, based on zuchini, sweet pepper, spring onions, koriander and edible flowers freshly harvested in the Sustainer Garden and filtered rain water.
2018/09/13 The Sustainer has been officially launched for the first time with the opening of `Inside Ecologies´ at the Weltkunstzimmer, Düsseldorf. Being an interactive part of the exhibition, the in real-life functioning Sustainer itself is being exhibited and demonstrated, as well as a presentation on its design strategy and principles. We had a fun night out at the Sustainer, accompanied by some disco and percussion tunes from our exhibiting neighbours, Morgenvogel Real Estate and Taka Kagitomi. It included demonstrating the pyrolyses stoves, cooking some tea and small snacks, consisting of veggies from the Sustainer garden, while producing biochar.
18/08/25 The ongoing planting since June of the team, now also including local residents, continued. Mainly edible plants on the basis of fertile earth, a mix of top earth from a local plantation, on-site found compost and earth, were planted in the different zones of the permaculture token garden. Brian and Taka are doing the very first harvest in the Sustainer garden, in this case of koriander plants, which were taken over from a neigboring garden. Several metal bins are available, filled only with the earth mix, ready to be planted by the local community.
18/08/23 Our fourth visit starts with finishing up all wood interior fittings, including all indoor and outdoor installations. For the first time the Sustainer is now ready to be used!
18/07/28 The construction of the kitchen interior gets started. The design consists out of a shelving-counter combination, ment for mixed use, applying the same building elements, with different dimensions. used for the interior shell.
18/07/26 The 3rd visit started with installing the off-grid solar system, running on 4 solar panels on the container roof. The water installations were next, starting with the rain water tanks for local rain water harvesting. As soon as these were in place and hooked up to each other and the the nearest-by roof and its roof drainage, the man-powered water sources in kitchen and bathroom got installed. The kitchen sink got equipped with a mobile drinking water device, which runs on gravity, using a coal and ceramic filter system. All water installations, as well as the garden, were now getting supplied by man-power and the bucket system, using the rain water coming from the rain water tanks.
